The day is upon us! I hope that you are as excited for this years America Recycles Day as we are. There are several events that we have going on around the area but a great example is the World Bank and IMF recycling drive!
The World Bank and IMF have teamed up with Capitol Asset Recovery and are doing a massive E-Cycling event at all of their combined buildings. Currently, we have deployed 14 E-Scrap recycling bins to various buildings of theirs and they are filling up quickly! We also had a truck stationed outside for a few hours on Thursday for employees to bring out their larger items and we filled it up with all sorts of electronics ranging from an electronic tooth brush to an air conditioning unit.
We are always looking to form partnerships on these types of events, so give us a call and set one up today!
Like many in this country I re-up my cell phone quite often. Whether through breaks, outdating, or new shiny syndrome (NSS its a thing trust me) we all end up getting a new cell phone on a pretty regular basis. But what do we do with the old ones? According to R2 there are several R2 certified vendors who are creating some very innovative ways of disposing of these cell phones
Many of the parts and components in smart phones are being successfully recovered for reuse by a number of our R2 Certified partners:
- Screens are reused in electronic toys
- CPUs are reused in eReaders and controllers
- GPUs are reused in digital frames
- WiFi chips are reused in WiFi USB dongles
And the list goes on. Sometimes this kind of recovery effort is not economically feasible in the U.S., which means many discarded smart phones end up being destroyed with only a fraction of the value recovered. The R2 Standard enables more environmentally beneficial outcomes by permitting global partnerships with audited or certified downstream vendors who are able to safely, cost-efficiently and legally recover valuable parts and components for reuse.
We work with some of these vendors getting your old electronics and cell phones recycled correctly!
This E3 has truly become about more than the (amazing, awesome, crazy, did I say awesome?) video games on display this year. That stems from the fact that more and more these video game systems are moving in to supplant former staples of our entertainment systems at home. Both of the new boxes now come equipped with Blu-rays, they both are going to have access to the internet and hence Netflix, Hulu, HBO go and the other online entertainment sites. This, when combined with the ever increasing gamer community, is going to mean that people will possibly now just require A TV either a PS4 or Xbox one (PS4) and some speakers for their living room. Additionally, these systems are no longer coming with Aux cables and just HDMI cables, so we better make that an LCD or Plasma TV.
On the actual gaming side of things there were some rather large revelations unveiled that could challenge the traditional PC v Console war. The introduction of Elder Scrolls Online to the landscape is at the forefront of this. Up until this point MMOs have been more or less strictly a PC attraction. With ESO now being the first major MMO title to be released for consoles could become quite the game changer when it comes to the overall field for PC V Console. In my opinion, the hardcore gamer will never truly leave the PC, until consoles can accomplish the precise control that the PC interface so easily accomplishes. That said, with this major MMO being on console it is possible that more and more of the recreational gamer finally making the jump to primarily gaming on their consoles (the price certainly wont hurt in that regard).
What does this mean? This will come to effect the Recycling industry in multiple ways. The first of which being previous generation of consoles flooding the market when people dump them for the new addition. Also, given the fact that gaming more and more requires HD capable televisions it is possible that the industry could see a spike in CRT destruction come Christmas time. Last but not least, it is possible that we could see an even further shift away from tower PCs as more and more gamers move to console and use their Laptops/ tablets for their web surfing and word processing.
Obviously these are theories of mine and not to be taken as fact, however I think that the evidence is there. And while obviously not concrete, I believe it is more than firm enough for this nerd to stand on.
When I think about Earth Day, I am so glad that I am working for a company that actively is helping the environment through electronics recycling. I thought that it would be a good idea to show case not only mine, but other employees ideas on what Earth Day means to them.
Tim Hilton (THIS GUY)
Growing up as a kid I remember doing the average Earth Day events like planting trees, tending gardens, making projects out of recycled stuffs etc. To be honest I found it to be almost a chore. I was a kid and didn’t want to plant trees, I wanted to climb them. So for the longest time I did not really care about the environment.
I would obviously recycle when I could and not litter, however there is so much more to it. I understand that people have only so much time to devote to one thing or another, trust me if there was a way for me to not need sleep or freeze time I would be right there. However to be truly part of the effort while working at Capitol Asset is something I truly cherish in my life. I am able to go to work every day and say that I am doing something worthwhile, and worthwhile.
If I can help just a few people to feel the way I feel now about the work I do and the environment I will feel like I truly accomplished something. Maybe not with this blog post or maybe not even this year, but to be able to show someone the joy that truly caring about the place most people take for granted? That is worth trying every day for me.
This year is my first Earth Day of the company, and I cannot overstate how excited I am to be able to help you all with your E-Cycling drives and Campaigns.
Zack Boorstein (Vice President)
I remember an activity of making cardboard cutouts in arts and crafts class in elementary school that said “Earth Day is Everyday” they were a globe on a stick with cotton balls as clouds – ironically I now work for a recycling company with the sole purpose of keeping electronics and heavy metals out of landfills. I know I am doing my part.
Ethan Hubbard (The man behind the scenes)
Our first major campaign was working with a client, and making arrangements for over 50 locations.
It required team effort to complete as the logistics for each location were unique and required a lot of information sharing to get everything completed on a tight deadline. It feels rewarding knowing the service we provide people, has a positive impact on the environment.
Lisa Ambrusko(Alexandria Store Manager)
Earth Day has come along way from where I stand. I remember the “Crying Indian” to fight Litter pollution; and as a girl scout we had the annual Plant a Tree day, but that was about as Green as it got. Today we are all so more aware and concerned for our planet and it is because of Green campaigns and other like movements now around the world. Honestly, the whole Idea of Earth Day reminds me of Robert and how much he loved being outside, hiking and biking and communing with nature. I think he would be proud of all us doing our part everyday.
Melissa (Office Assistant)
Earth day reminds me to recycle, conserve energy and in general live greener.
Chris Scott (CEO)
Earth Day for me is something that has crept into my life, but makes me smile each year when I think that the everyone is yet again thinking about the planet and how we impact it. I love the outdoors and spend as much time enjoying it as I possibly can. When I grew up nobody thought of the environment, but then there weren’t so many cars and life seemed less about consumption and more about living. In today’s society we are expected to keep up with our neighbours and have the newest and latest technology, these help keep us informed and educated, but it is amazing to me how quickly our needs and expectations change.
I am happy and proud to be running a company that can address this by providing a solution and outlet for all the unwanted equipment whilst providing an avenue for the reuse of these.
All of you who are choosing to read this post and recycle your electronics responsibly have our eternal gratitude and thanks. We are here every day, ready, to help you with your E-Waste and I implore you to take advantage of our willingness to serve, and passion for the environment.
In impoverished countries around the world people put their lives on the line unnecessarily while recycling E-waste.
This article uses cable burning as one of many examples of health damaging E-Waste techniques. This really is where the R2 standard practices that Capitol Asset employs really benefits mankind. We know where all of our recyclable materials end up and with whom. Capitol Asset is dedicated to ensuring that E-waste is taken care of properly. You can rest assured that when you deal with Capitol Asset you are dealing with a company that holds itself, and its partner companies, to the highest standards.

What better way to kick off the new year then with some awesome tech news! http://dvice.com/archives/2013/01/tobii-rex-bring.php
Apparently Tobii is nearly ready for full scale production of its gaze tracking hardware. This Hardware will alleviate the need for a mouse by simply tracking your pupils around the screen and having them be the pointer. While I will always like to have a mouse on hand to play games or whatever else, others may find this new hardware indispensable. Check out the new hardware at Dvice.com!
Yesterday was America Recycles Day and across the country hundreds of recycling drives were held. Including a few by us!
We collected thousands of pounds of electronics waste from Maryland, Virginia, and the District! I personally was all over Maryland and DC participating in the drives and even loaded my van full of scrap electronics to haul back here as all of our trucks were filled with equipment! Needless to say it was a lot of fun and a great day for E-Cycling awareness!
I would like to thank all of our partners across the area for making this day a great success and spreading the word!
America Recycles Day is not the only day when E-Cycling events can be held, if you are interested in hosting an event head on over to the contact us page and send us some information!
Hello internets! We are proud to announce that we will be partnering with MOM’s and their brand new Waldorf location! We will be providing E-Cycling services so get out there and support MOM’s and help the environment!
